What is probate?

Probate is a piece of paper issued by the courts which sets out the details of a person who’s died, along with the people authorised to sort out their money and belongings. It’s also called a grant of representation.

Why is probate important?

Probate unlocks access to the assets of the person who’s died. It allows you to close accounts, transfer money, put the house on the market and sell shares. For banks and others, it’s kind of a ‘guarantee’ - it’s the best way they have of being sure that person has died and that they’re dealing with the right people.
